A Complete Hoover Dam Experience
Overall, a very good experience.
This tour seemed to be a collection of tour vendors working in collaboration. The primary operator picked us up at our hotel and took us to a staging area close to the dam where we had to wait for another vendor's vehicle to take us into the 'secure' area at river level below the dam where we boarded the pontoon raft. The raft provided a spectacular view of the dam one would not otherwise have but was rather bogus because we only traveled a few hundred yards downstream an then back to a point in the middle of the river to let everyone take photos. The raft operator was quite knowledgable as was the driver of the van that brought us into the 'secure' area. We were then returned to the primary transport vehicle which then took us through a security inspection and then to the visitor center where we were given 'VIP' tour tickets and told to get in line for the dam tour. This was O.K. and we were separated from the rest of the visitors after a brief movie with archive footage of the making of the dam. However, anyone can buy the 'VIP' tickets at the dam and do everything we did except for the transportation and the raft. The guides that work at the dam itself are outstanding and most informative and the ''VIP' tour does take you to more areas deep inside the dam that you do not see on the standard tour. I would definitely recommend this tour but don't expect a rafting adventure on the river. Also, I don't know if it was the speed of our primary transport vehicle or something wrong with its suspension, but it shook so badly on the highway at speed that I thought the vehicle would fall apart. When hitting bumps it felt as if there was no suspension or shock absorbers. Combine the two and it felt as if the driver would loose control for sure!!! Hopefully you will get a different 'luxury' van or the company will spend some money on the vehicle we rode in.

Boat trip below the dam was a unique and special experience.
Amazing tip which was made better by the boat trip on the Colorado below the dam. Would higly recomend this because you do not get as good a perspective on top of the dam as you do below. Its also easier to understand the daunting tasks faced by the builders when at the bottom of Black Canyon. Greg was an outstanding tour guide who picked us up promptly at our hotel and gave us tremendous insights into the history of Las Vegas as well as Nevada. As a special detour, we made a stop when we got to see a herd of big horn sheep. While this tour is more expensive than the other Hoover dam tours, it was well worth the price.
