The Vegas desert seems like an unlikely home for marine life, but the Shark Reef at Mandalay Bay is no ordinary exhibit. Featuring a large aquarium filled with 1.6 million gallons of water, the exhibit is home to more than 2,000 animals. Everything from 14-foot long tiger sharks to a 300-pound sea turtle call the Shark Reef home. At the exhibit you'll get to see some of the world's most exotic marine predators and other species like the sawfish, giant rays, jellyfish and a rare golden crocodile.
The attraction's interior design looks like an ancient temple that's slowly sinking into the ocean. One of the unique elements of Shark Reef is a tunnel that travels through part of the aquarium, giving guests an unparalleled view of various species of sharks and the aquarium's largest animals. This part of the exhibit is designed to look like a sunken shipwreck, creating a colorful seascape for the incredible species that inhabit the aquarium.
The sharks featured in the exhibit include blacktip reef sharks, whitetip reef sharks, bonnethead sharks, nurse sharks, sand tiger sharks, sandbar sharks, zebra sharks, white spotted bamboo sharks, port Jackson sharks and lemon sharks. Some species of sharks at Shark Reef will grow to be more than 18 feet long. Seeing the massive sharks swim peacefully alongside the smaller fish is mesmerizing. Since all of the sharks are fed on a regular basis, there's no need for them to seek food within their tank. It's one of the many fascinating facts you'll get to learn at Shark Reef.
Shark Reef opened in 2000 and is the only aquarium in Nevada accredited by the American Zoo and Aquarium Association. It's considered one of the most prestigious facilities of its kind along with the San Diego Zoo and Sea World.
Along with the shark tunnel, the exhibit also features interactive stations and other fascinating creatures, including crocodiles, piranhas and a Komodo dragon. In addition to being an exciting place to visit, the Shark Reef is also devoted to conservation and preservation of marine life.
