The Café at THEhotel Review:

Sitting in the ultrachic, strikingly modern eatery at THEhotel, Mandalay Bay's latest venture, you might imagine yourself in San Francisco, London or even Sydney, rather than seconds from the glitz of Las Vegas Boulevard. In any other Strip property, this stylish spot would be just another regular coffee shop but, like THEhotel, The Café is setting a new standard.

THEhotel's designer, Terry Dougall, has raised the Strip-property bar in terms of sophistication with refined architecture punctuated with clean lines and world-class art. The Café features a pair of soaring white brick-wall ornaments, a black parquet floor, straight-backed velour upholstered chairs in a riot of pastels, and black-top wooden tables set simply with gray cloth placemats. Soft jazz hangs in the air and a diverse, distinctly urban clientele crowds the tables.

The 24/7 menu is eclectic, though generally on the safe side. Many of these dishes evolved from a coffee shop menu, such as zin-beef short ribs (plump, tender meat braised in Zinfandel paired with a wild-mushroom risotto), an Asian hot-and-sour sea bass masked in a crisp batter and a killer Berkshire pork loin chop done with a tangerine honey glaze.

Vegas isn't known for breakfast, but The Café excels at such morning staples as cinnamon French toast, fluffy Belgian waffles, huevos rancheros and grilled corned-beef hash. At lunch, try the enormous and tasty Cuban sandwich, or one of the hearty soups such as albondigas-- a Mexican soup stocked with four huge meatballs and fresh vegetables.
