The log cabin façade and rope-wrapped sign are the first clues that Badlands Saloon is full of cowboy comforts. Inside, wood paneling is punctuated with mounted buck trophies and six-shooters in leather holsters. There's country on the jukebox and a neon sign promoting Budd Light and Tim McGraw.
More than a themed gay bar, Badlands feels like a neighborhood bar. Regulars stash personalized beer mugs in name-taped cubbies. Customers have been known to clear their own empties to help out a bartender who has an after-shift date. Most men who frequent Badlands are over 30. Cowboy hats may make hello kisses tricky, but they wear 'em anyhow.
It's just 25 cents to play pool, and drinks are cheap, so straight couples can be found at Badlands, too. It's a working-class hang with a hole-in-the-wall charm that's hard to find in Vegas. Badlands Saloon has a welcoming smile for all, 24 hours a day, but bring you buffalo nickles, 'cause it's cash only.
