Rok Review

For a town full of so many things and so many vibes, it was always a wonder how hard-pressed clubgoers were to find a nightclub with an out and out "rock" feel in Sin City.

Sure, you could find a show where the main attraction was a man dressed like Joan Rivers or a restaurant willing to serve you duck liver, but just a place to grab a drink, dance and listen to something with actual lyrics and beats the don’t repeat over and over (and over) again? Those places were few and far between.

But Rok at New York-New York changed all that.

A Vegas endeavor created by Jonas Lowrence and designed by Francois Frossard (who also designed Mansion and Set in Miami), Rok is a lot more than just a handful of beats worthy of bobbing your head to. In a setting designed to be intimate rather than overwhelming, Rok boasts not only a DJ, but a VJ (or video jockey for those just joining Vegas' party scene), who conducts lighting and images like others man a turntable.

There’s a screen that snakes around the top of the club’s indoor area (there’s also a nice-sized patio) where you can see eye-catching footage of concerts, live shots of the club and animation that’ll make you scratch your head trying to figure out what it is – until you realize you don’t care because it looks cool, whatever it is.

The club’s layout is one of the most intuitive in Vegas, which may not seem like something worth mentioning, but if you’ve ever lost your best friend on the veranda at a mega-club, you know that ease-of-navigation is actually one of the more important things a nightclub can have.

The main room is rectangular and the bar runs nearly the length of it, plus you can see the video screen from almost everywhere. The stage area (where Katy Perry performed for the club’s opening) is also easy to spot.

The bathrooms (which are thankfully not hard to find) are coyly unisex – you just walk in and some stalls are for men and some stalls are for women, with a communal sink area tying everything together.

Then there’s the patio. The whole rock vibe permeates most of the club, but, if you’ll go with us on this, the inside feels more New York rock, while the outside seems more L.A. rock. It’s a less frenetic vibe out on the patio, where Vegas’ desert climate lends itself to a year-round lounging spot. That’s not to say, though, that things aren't unabashedly rock 'n' roll out there, too. Last time we were at Rok…well, it’s better to see it for yourself.

That sums up nicely the part of Rok that, depending on the night, might be our favorite – the club is obviously conducive to having a good time but, if you're getting a little tired, it's also a great place to watch others have a good time. And let's be honest, isn't watching the crazy things other people do half the fun of rock 'n' roll?
