Ivan Kane's Forty Deuce Review

Royal Jelly
There's a whole series of clichés dedicated to the idea that if you don't evolve, or keep up, or change, you'll die out. While it seems unlikely that the appeal of women slowly and seductively removing their clothing will ever wear thin, Ivan Kane is in the business of upping the ante anyway. Imported from the Hollywood location of his Forty Deuce Nightclub and Burlesque, Las Vegas is now home to Ivan Kane's Royal Jelly, a rock 'n' roll spin on traditional burlesque. The core elements are there – clothes come off, some more clothes come off, the crowd goes wild. But this isn't your mother's burlesque show. Dancers drop in from the ceiling, dancers wear gas masks, dancers hang from the rafters and all the while Pink Floyd plays in the background. Or David Bowie. Or Aerosmith. Kane said the Royal Jelly show is a product of his, "desire to open the boundaries a little bit, just to kind of smack the face of convention." If you look close enough between the pleather outfits and God Save the Queen underwear, you can probably see Convention there, rubbing his reddened cheek because with Royal Jelly, Kane definitely connects. |
Some people come to Vegas with a few misconceptions (let's call them "ideas") in their heads. Nighttime in Sin City goes something like this: dinner, a show and then a club. But here's what they don't know – you can consolidate.
Ivan Kane's Forty Deuce is definitely a club, but there's a show, too. And what a show it is.
Forty Deuce has a crew of trained dancers practicing the art of burlesque twice a night, which is to say, there are sexy women, up on a stage, performing some of the most intricate (and sexy) dance moves you've ever seen.
And these aren't just women who were on the dance team for one semester in high school – these are dancers that know their stuff. Kane said if he sees 200 perspective dancers at an audition, he's lucky to cast just one.
If you're not familiar with burlesque, let's explain what you're in for – seductive dancing, but the kind that teases and still leaves something to the imagination. There's absolutely no nudity, but the combination of strategically placed tape and all the stuff you see come off before you see the tape makes it a million times sexier than actual nudity coupled with lifeless dancing.
Forty Deuce is on the small end of the Vegas club spectrum, but only in size and it works to the advantage of clubgoers because it means the entire space is a good place to be. There's no lost, lonely hallway where you get stuck away from everybody else – you're right in the thick of it, no matter where you are and, with the exception of some space behind the bar, you can see the stage (which wraps around the front corner of the club).
You might be worried that sexy women dancing translates into a bit of a boys' club as far as crowds go, but you can rest easy. The style of dancing and the way it's performed brings in the women, too. There's a universal appeal in art set to music, but there's also something empowering about the way the dancers command the crowds. We've heard of more than a few amateur performances back at home after a night at Forty Deuce. (There's even a little boutique, if you want to make it really authentic).
If you're still wary, here's one more thing to put your mind at ease – because there are shows throughout the night, it takes a lot of the pressure off of you. Stuck in an awkward conversation? Just spilled a drink on yourself? Want an excuse to say something to that guy or girl standing near you? The burlesque shows are the perfect conversation starter (or end-er).
