The Palms Golf Club Review

The Palms Golf Club, located in Mesquite, is two golf courses in one. It's a perfect blend of traditional and desert golf that will both challenge and reward players. The Palms' front nine is an old-fashioned, all-grass layout with wide, friendly fairways. The back nine provides a trip through and around deep canyons for a true desert test. Both nines add up to 6,813 yards of the kind of challenging resort golf that is the Mesquite trademark.

Both nines are enhanced by many sparkling water features (if your ball avoids the water). Both nines also are very well bunkered with 45 greenside bunkers in all. From the back tees, the four par 5's are short (such as the 482-yard first hole) to medium (such as the 541-yard fourth and 536-yard 15th holes). Five of the par 4's measure 400 yards or more, while the three others play less than 370 yards, giving a nice overall balance and plenty of scoring chances.

The par-5, 482-yard first hole invites players to get off to a gentle start: It's a perfect warm-up hole as the dogleg right features two fairway bunkers. One guards the turn, while the other, slightly farther and on the left, pinches the fairway to challenge big hitters. Another pair of bunkers guards the front of the green, and a third guards it in back. Then the challenge begins. The 400-yard, par-4, second hole is rated the toughest on the course. Water left off the tee and two bunkers right, along with three bunkers surrounding the green, make par a tough task.

The signature hole is the 536-yard, dogleg-right 15th. There's a 150-foot drop from the tee to the fairway below, giving players a scenic view of the surrounding Mesquite area.

The 18th, rated the second toughest hole on the course, is a great closing hole, and it's also a nice way to balance the first hole, one of the easiest. The 432-yard, dogleg-left par 4 plays to a fairway that is pinched off by bunkers and desert, while the elevated green is open in front but otherwise surrounded by bunkers.

For after-round refreshments, a spacious clubhouse with a snack bar awaits.
