Golf Summerlin Review
Against a majestic mountain backdrop, Golf Summerlin lays out a perfect buffet of golf choices -- whether it's a traditional round on one of two tournament-caliber par-72 layouts or a quick 18 on an award-winning (par-60) executive course. Three Billy Casper/Greg Nash designs take delightful advantage of their mountain surroundings, each course offers first-class food and friendly service and all three layouts are kept in immaculate condition all year long.
Palm Valley, at 6,850 yards, is the oldest, longest and toughest (rating/slope: 72/127) of the three. The mature layout is neatly manicured with undulating fairways and deceptively rolling, creeping bentgrass greens. The course's longest par 5's open and close the round. The first hole measures 537 yards; the 18th plays 534. The finishing hole is a slight dogleg right with water right from tee to green and out-of-bounds and bunkers left. Water abuts the elevated green, which also is bunkered left and back.
The 177-yard third hole is the shortest par 3. The 16th hole plays 229 yards to an elevated green flanked by three bunkers left and a sharp drop-off right. Palm Valley's 10 par 4's, from 343-454 yards, will give most a good chance to swing all 14 clubs.
The 6,512-yard Highland Falls course lies at an elevation of 3,053 feet and offers stunning panoramic views of the Las Vegas valley. Rolling hills on the front nine become steeper on the back nine. The four par 5's play 521-544 yards, and with many elevation changes and strategic fairway and greenside bunkering, they're all challenging. Eight par 4's play less than 390 yards. Three par 3's play less than 170 yards. The par-3 14th plays downhill 206 yards to a green bunkered right. From the tee, one of the highest golfing points in the valley, players can look to the southeast and see the entire city.
Eagle Crest is a 4,067-yard, par-60 executive course built along some of the highest points in Summerlin. It has won a couple of VegasGolfer Fairway Awards for "Best Executive Course." Besides panoramic city views, the course offers 18 lofty challenges for players who appreciate a timely round.
Each course also features its own restaurant. All serve pleasant mountain views as well as great breakfast and lunch specials.
