Primm Valley Golf Club - Desert Review
Two Tom Fazio masterpieces await visitors to Primm, just 35 minutes south of Las Vegas. The Primm Valley Golf Club is home to the Lakes Course and the Desert Course, both of which offer plenty of stunning views as well as golf challenges.
Although they are located in the desert, these are far from mirages. Both courses are rated in the top 100 public courses in the United States. GOLF Magazine listed both courses in its "Top 100 Resort Courses You Can Play" in its 2001 edition, and both received Golf Digest's Four-and-a-Half Star Award. Need more incentive to play? Well, once on the tee box of the first hole on either layout, you'll be rewarded with acres of rolling, lush fairways and true-rolling greens.
On the Desert Course, holes are designed to bring the surrounding views of the area into full focus. Waterfalls and lush landscaping add to a breathtaking golf experience. Cactus, palm trees and native vegetation surround this course as you tackle 7,131 more yards of elegance.
The 389-yard, par-4 sixth hole is one to remember. It plays short, but tough. Called Desert Island, it more than lives up to its name. It's an island green, so to speak, with desert running right up to the green from middle left of the green all the way in front and to the back right. It's a giant waste area that requires a well-placed second shot to avoid trouble. A second shot hit into the waste area makes for a tough up and down, so par on this short par 4 is a good score.
A beautiful, airy clubhouse welcomes players before and after the round. The pro shop features brand-name clubs and clothing, and the restaurant's variety will satisfy any diner. You also can grab a bite or drink and sit on the patio to watch the action on the course overlooking the beautiful par-4 16th on the Lakes Course. It's a golf paradise with a staff that caters to your every whim. The range is big enough to accommodate about any number of golfers, and there's a large putting green.
Golf stay-and-play packages are available from the hotel/casinos in Primm, just minutes from the course, or through MGM MIRAGE properties. Also on site is the Primm Valley Golf Academy to work on your game, and club repair also is available.
Next time you want to tackle the best a golf destination has to offer, check out Fazio's designs at Primm. The tough decision is picking which course to play. But here's the easy answer: Play them both. You'll be glad you did.
