Painted Desert Golf Club Review

Painted Desert, playing to 6,781 yards, can lay claim to being one of the first desert courses in Vegas. The course opened in 1987 and features tight fairways. But if you miss the fairway, the desert is playable and will give players the chance to get the ball back into play on these gorgeous fairways.

The views abound from elevated tee boxes. The course is playable and challenging, and even if you're not having your best day, the course won't beat you up. The 193 -yard, par-3 eighth is one of the course's best tests. The tee shot, from an elevated green, plays to a sloping green that is guarded by water in front and to the left as well as bunkers behind.

Another challenge is the 535-yard, par-5 17th. It's reachable in two, but beware of out-of-bounds to the right. This is one of the best chances to post a birdie. Variety is the theme at Painted Desert. Four of the par-5 holes play more than 500 yards, making these challenging. Shorter par 3 holes, ranging from 124 to 191 yards, require pinpoint accuracy.

The eighth is considered the signature hole. The par 3 plays to 197 yards and is hit from an elevated tee to a green that's guarded by water and sand.

The 18th, a par 4 measuring 404 yards, is an outstanding hole to finish the round. A big bunker set to the left challenges the tee shot, which must carry far enough to find a level lie to set up the difficult second shot into the green. And this is no ordinary green. It's elevated and slopes significantly from back to front. It's also surrounded by bunkers putting that much more emphasis on accuracy. A par here is a fine score, and if a player take a few minutes to enjoy the view of this stunning hole, it's sure to encourage a return trip to Painted Desert.

The clubhouse is home to a large circular bar under vaulted ceilings that offer nice views of the course. A fireplace adds to the ambience for players after rounds on those cooler days.
