Oasis Golf Club Review
Towering red rock canyons, rugged desert bluffs and acres and acres of lush green fairways combine to make the Palmer Course at the Oasis Golf Club, located in Mesquite, one of the more unforgettable golf experiences most players ever will tackle.
Lakes and small waterfalls add to the beauty of the desert serenity of this Arnold Palmer-designed course, which many in the know consider one of his finest endeavors. Golf Digest rates the 27-hole Oasis property 4 1/2 stars, and many locally based PGA Tour professionals have returned in the past several years to compete in the Nevada State Open with the Palmer Course as one of the sites. Measuring just more than 6,700 yards from the back tees, the par-71 course offers challenges for everyone, especially if the wind is blowing, but four sets of tees keep it playable for all.
The course features a nice blending of short, medium-length and longer holes. The front nine includes three of the four par 3's. The longest, No. 2, plays 223 yards from the back tees. Eight of the 11 par 4's play less than 400 yards from the back tees. The longest -- and most challenging -- of the three par 5's is No. 12, which plays 549 yards. Distances at Oasis can be deceiving as many teeing areas are situated 50 or more feet above landing areas.
The par-5 fifth plays 540 yards from the back tees. Depending on the breeze, the green is reachable in two. Otherwise, a layup second shot must find its way into a narrow landing area amid bunkers. There's also a bunker behind the green, and grass bunkers on each side.
The seventh is a par 3 playing 162 yards over a gorge. Bunkers guard the green in front, and another is cut into the slope behind. There's really no bailout area, forcing golfers to fire right at the flag. The King would be proud. The resort also boasts an additional nine holes -- the "Vista" course. The par-37 nine is built on slightly less severe terrain. It will soon be expanded to 18 holes and will be named The Canyons at the Oasis. The Canyons will be a par-72 layout to complement the challenging and scenic Palmer layout. The player-friendly course will feature large fairways and Bermuda greens. It will be open in the fall of 2005.
