Falcon Ridge Golf Course Review
Falcon Ridge Golf Course is the latest track to soar onto the Mesquite golf scene. Nine holes opened on the Kelby Hughes-designed course on Feb. 1, 2004, while the back nine opened in October.
The front nine, which features bentgrass greens and Tif 419 Bermuda with rye overseed fairways, winds seamlessly through the bluffs of north Mesquite. A par 5 measuring 500 yards opens the nine, with bluffs coming into play from the opening tee shot. A good drive must be kept left to avoid having to lob a second shot over the 50-foot-high bluff that guards the right side of the fairway on this dogleg-right hole. Trying to get home in two will prove to be a challenge to even the best players as there is just a sliver of an opening to this large, undulating green.
The scenic excursion continues on the second hole. The 144-yard, par-3 hole is guarded in front by a pond, and the green sits at the base of another bluff. Proper club selection is vital as short and right is the only bailout spot on this testy hole.
On the third, the interest of the big guns will be piqued. Playing just 310 yards, it's a drivable par 4 with a lone bunker. But what a bunker it is, cutting off half the already narrow fairway making a pinpoint shot off the tee a must.
The fourth and fifth holes play uphill and provide gorgeous views of the surrounding area. Both are fronted by bunkers and -- as are many holes on this front nine -- they guard the right-front portion of the greens.
The signature hole for both beauty and challenge is the sixth, a par 4 measuring 420 yards. It plays shorter because of a 75-foot drop from the tee box to the fairway. A deep-blue pond to the right comes into play 200 yards off the tee and also on the second shot to a huge two-tiered green.
The back nine is a challenging roller-coaster trip with elevation changes on every hole.
Falcon Ridge Golf Course will be played for its unique challenges and for its irresistible beauty.
