CasaBlanca Golf Club Review

CasaBlanca Golf Club has been a host course of the Nevada State Open for the past several years, and at a glance it's easy to see why. Lush emerald fairways wind through the preserved wetlands of the Mesquite flat amid glimpses of the Virgin River, while desert wildflowers accent ryegrass fairways, bentgrass greens, white-sand bunkers and glittering lakes.

The 7,011-yard, par-72 resort course is not only beautiful and tough enough for the pros (rating/slope: 72.5/130) but also offers five sets of tee boxes so everyone can enjoy it.

Water comes into play on seven holes of the links-style layout, but most treacherously on holes seven through 11, which all play clockwise around a lake. Each hole features water right, but the landing areas are fairly generous.

No. 2 is a 507-yard par 5 with sharp teeth. A huge fairway bunker guards the shortcut on the dogleg right, while water and deep bunkers horseshoe around the green, which is graciously open in front.

The fifth hole, a dogleg-right par 4 with an alternate fairway, plays 466 yards and is rated the course's toughest hole. The fairway straight toward the green is protected by a big bunker right, so the smarter tee shot is probably to the left fairway. That angle lengthens the hole, but it also opens up the two-tiered green, which is guarded on the right by a series of bunkers.

No. 8 is a par 3 playing 230 yards. A waterfall runs into a lake near the right side of the large green. But, thankfully, each closer tee box moves left, taking more and more water out of play -- resort golf at its finest. A huge greenside beach bunker right also will save many shots from the water.
