Boulder City Golf Course Review

Boulder City Golf Course opened more than 30 years ago, and it has the mature trees and fairways and greens to prove it. Playing 6,561 yards (rating/slope: 70.4/110), it's an old-fashioned muni course in the best sense of the term: There's friendly neighborhood service in a relaxed clubhouse atmosphere, a pleasantly walkable layout that won't punish players too severely no matter how they may be playing and low green fees that easily make the whole experience one of the best golf values in the valley.

Operated by Boulder City Parks and Recreation Department, the course's greens and fairways are as plush and well manicured as those of many top-ranked resort courses. The traditional design features grass and more grass. Drive one into the trees that line most fairways and there's still a good chance to find your ball in a grassy lie, though there are so many trees that errant drives don't go unpunished.

But even for all the trees and with seven holes featuring water hazards, the layout is friendly throughout, with most holes in the short to medium range. Seven par 4's play less than 400 yards. The par-4 eighth plays just 276 yards, but don't be fooled. The two-tiered green is fronted on the right by a lovely white-rock braced pond with a central fountain. It's possible to play the hole with a driver and putter; or an 8-iron, wedge and putter; or almost any combination of clubs in between.

On the back nine there's a good chance to pick up strokes on two short par 5's -- the 12th and 16th, playing just 477 and 484 yards. A solid drive on the downhill 12th will leave a long iron or fairway wood to the green, though the putting surface is crossed in front by a stream. The 16th plays uphill, but both the fairway and green are guarded by a single bunker on the right. While making some birdies, listen to the many songbirds in all those trees and pause to admire the many excellent views of the Eldorado Valley throughout the round. For other amenities, a nice practice green, chipping green and a full driving range (with both grass and mats) are all within walking distance of the 5,000-square-foot clubhouse, which houses a snack bar and small pro shop.
