Cloud Nine Balloon Experience Review

Fun Facts
  • Measuring at 11 stories high, the balloon stands taller than the Statue of Liberty.
  • The balloon contains a volume of helium equal to 210,000 cubic feet.
  • The helium will stay inside the balloon for up to seven years and will only need to be topped off with additional helium a couple of times a year.
  • Kevin Michaels, the CEO of Cloud Nine Entertainment, always had a love for balloons. When he was a child, he collected a large amount of balloons from a cruise dinner party. He was able to fill up his entire stateroom. (He also loves the Disney-Pixar movie, "Up.")
  • Cloud Nine pilots are certified and professionally trained to operate innovative, high-tech equipment.

Up, up and away!

That's the first thing that comes to mind the moment you take off on the Cloud Nine Balloon Experience ride.

The Cloud Nine Balloon Experience is the world's largest, land-tethered helium balloon ride. Its custom-built gondola holds 25-30 passengers, offering guests the chance to fly 500 feet above the Strip.

Imagine soaring high above the Las Vegas Strip, being eye-level with the top of Mandalay Bay hotel. You'll catch bird's-eye views of the city's surrounding mountains, experiencing something completely different from a helicopter ride. You'll have the freedom to walk around, take pictures from different angles and enjoy the fresh air.

"This to me is not just a balloon ride," said Kevin Michaels president and CEO of Cloud Nine Entertainment. "It's truly a feast for the senses."

Afraid of heights? There's no need to worry. Since the balloon is always tied to the ground with a steel cable, it's never in a state of free flight, making it both a safe and fun trip for everyone. The only part where it's slightly shaky is during take off. After that, it's smooth sailing.

The Cloud Nine Balloon Experience is environmentally safe, non-polluting and virtually silent. And although the balloon measures 7-stories-wide by 11-stories-tall, it takes up less energy than a standard elevator.

At ground level, the attraction features a spacious courtyard with beautiful, metallic wind sculptures and a historical timeline sharing fun facts about air balloons. For example, did you know in 1782, a sheep, duck and rooster were used as passengers during a test flight?

On Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights, passengers can enjoy a barbecue dinner after the experience. Hot dogs, hamburgers, salads as well as champagne, wine and beer are available for purchase. Sit down at one of the tables and enjoy your meal while listening to jazz music. Cloud Nine Balloon Experience is also available for private parties. Private parties include unlimited balloon rides for guests. The event coordinators can also arrange catering, music and entertainment.

Located directly across from Mandalay Bay on the south end of the Strip, the balloon can be seen from miles away. The wait isn't long, either -- the balloon ride leaves every 12 minutes.

After your experience, you can buy a personalized certificate, which is placed in a vintage-looking folder. There is also a gift shop area if you want to take home hats, clothing and any other souvenirs. Now you can can tell your friends that you rode in the biggest balloon in the world.
